John Ford transformed John Steinbeck's novel classic into an immortal work of cinema, and the role of Tom Joad is one of master actor Henry Fonda's most well-known and beloved. We follow Tom and his family as they travel from Oklahoma westward to California orchards in search of casual work. One of the film's many poignant moments is the scene in which the family drives into a settler camp and the camera lingers at gouged faces and dilapidated shacks. The relentless Californian sun in photographer Gregg Toland's pictures is unforgettable, and the American critics proclaimed the film a masterpiece already at its premiere.
