In the dark + meeting with Robert Więckiewicz before the screening

In the near future, the world is ruled by an omnipresent artificial intelligence called the Head, which controls power, security, communication and entertainment. The drama “In the Dark” was nominated in 2012 for an Oscar, in the category of best foreign language film. The basis for the script of the war story of the Holocaust was the fact-based 1990 novel “In the Sewers of Lvov” (In the canals of Lviv) by Robert Marshall. Some plots were also taken from the memories of an eyewitness to those events, Krystyna Chiger, who was then only seven years old. This is a story of salvation, she later described her dramatic experiences in the autobiographical book “Girl in a Green Sweater”, describing the wartime fate of her Chiger family, as well as other Jews, hiding in the Lviv canals.

The protagonist of the film, which takes place during the German occupation, when thousands of Lviv Jews were murdered, is an authentic figure, channeler Leopold Socha. Thanks to his excellent knowledge of the sewage system of the city, he hid the escapees from the ghetto in Lviv. This ordinary worker, who works in the maintenance of canals, a petty thief, however, in the face of tragedy, showed his true nature as a man sensitive to human suffering. For more than a year, he cared for and hid Jews who miraculously escaped extermination. He was helped by his friend from work, Szczepek Wróblewski.
