How to look and “read” the picture? Is it possible to learn to look more slowly, more attentively, more consciously? How to see what at first glance remains invisible? During the workshop we will consider how the composition guides our gaze, what can be hidden in the seemingly minor elements and how the artists built their paintings. We will also talk about the context of the era — how history, customs and everyday life influenced the art created. The workshop is aimed at people who want to treat contact with art as a personal experience, a space for stopping, reflection and attentive encounter with the painting.

About the event

How to look and “read” the picture? Is it possible to learn to look more slowly, more attentively, more consciously? How to see what at first glance remains invisible? During the workshop we will consider how the composition guides our gaze, what can be hidden in the seemingly minor elements and how the artists built their paintings. We will also talk about the context of the era — how history, customs and everyday life influenced the art created. The workshop is aimed at people who want to treat contact with art as a personal experience, a space for stopping, reflection and attentive encounter with the painting.

The workshops are part of a series of meetings for adults inspired by the figures of artists, art and aesthetics of the turn of the 20th century, accompanying the exhibition “Olga Boznańska and... Polish painting of the 19th and early 20th centuries from the collection of the National Museum in Gdańsk”. During the meetings, we will look at the works of art more closely than on a daily basis. We will consider the way they were created, the style of the era and the themes that interested the artists of the fin de siècle period. You will be able to try your hand at activities inspired by 19th and early 20th century painting. Still lifes, outdoor paintings, collage experiments and reading and deconstructing paintings await you. The cycle is aimed at adults who want to slow down, immerse themselves in art and creation. Try different ways of looking at the image, both as a viewer and as a creator. Artistic skills are not required.
