Kabul, just before the Taliban took power. August 2021. Naru, a 30-year-old cameraman at the largest television station in the city, professes a simple rule that everything around seems to confirm: there are no good men in this country. She experiences sexism at every turn, especially at work, and divorcing her abusive husband would mean losing a child. When she goes to the newsroom and starts working with Qodrat, an elderly married reporter who turns out to be more sensitive and tactful than she might have expected, she slowly changes her mind.

About the event

Kabul, just before the Taliban took power. August 2021. Naru, a 30-year-old cameraman at the largest television station in the city, professes a simple rule that everything around seems to confirm: there are no good men in this country. She experiences sexism at every turn, especially at work, and divorcing her abusive husband would mean losing a child. When she goes to the newsroom and starts working with Qodrat, an elderly married reporter who turns out to be more sensitive and tactful than she might have expected, she slowly changes her mind.

A film by Shahrbanoo Sadat, one of the most important contemporary Afghan women, opened this year's edition of the Berlinale. It is a cinema that, with great courage and sense, refuses to show Afghan women exclusively as victims. Naru is ambitious, stubborn, funny and full of desires.

After the show, we invite you to talk about what is happening off-screen: about love as a form of resistance, about work and independence as privileges that still have to be fought for. The meeting will be led by social activist Andra Kluczyk in the company of guests.

Andra Kluczyk - meeting leader. Social activist with many years of experience in conducting and organizing cultural events. Professionally associated with LGBT+ Film Festival and AFryKamera.

GUESTS:

Fatima Ahmadi, a young Afghan activist, came to Poland in 2021 at the age of 20. This happened just after the Taliban took power. She seeks to publicize the situation of Afghan women by speaking publicly at events concerning human rights and the situation in Afghanistan, and by participating, for example, in meetings such as ours.

Michał Mohammadreza Rezazadeh - born in the north of Iran, in Poland since 2017. Cultural scholar, translator of languages and culture, author of the channel “Iranian in Poland”. Master of Liberal Arts.
