About the event

Andrzej Wajda's “Without Anesthesia” (1978) is one of the most important and uncompromising images of the cinema of moral anxiety, clearly exposing the mechanisms of destruction of extraordinary individuals in the PRL.

Jerzy Michałowski (Zbigniew Zapasiewicz), a respected and independent foreign correspondent, at one point loses control of his life. Wife Eve unexpectedly leaves him to a younger journalist, which becomes the beginning of a ruthless tantrum. The personal crisis immediately spills over into the professional sphere: Jerzy's lectures and trips abroad are canceled, partisans turn their heads away from him, and the political game deprives him of authority. It culminates in court, where slanderous and Pharisaic arguments are used against him during the divorce case. Soon after, a tragic accident occurs.

Although the film is often compared to Wajda's greatest masterpieces, it is distinguished by the outstanding, nuanced role of Zbigniew Zapasiewicz and his exceptional courage in describing the gray reality of the 1970s. The film poignantly shows the dark side of the system, which was dominated by hypocrisy, envy, scheming and cowardice, creating a universal portrait of man entangled in a system with no way out.
