Strauss's songs — “Morgen,” “Zueignung,” and “Allerseelen” — show three different shades of late-Romantic emotionality: intimate anticipation, ardent devotion, and the memory of lost love. In Schönberg's “Zwei Gesänge” we find a very similar mood, but brought to the limits of harmonic intensity. They foreshadow transformations that would soon completely change his musical languages and give a new direction to the music of the 20th century.
“Songs of Travel” by Vaughan Williams directs our attention to the figure of the wanderer. The cycle to poetry by Robert Louis Stevenson tells about a journey understood not only literally, but also as an experience of loneliness, freedom and transience. Thanks to this, the whole program can be read as a story of different forms of estrangement — from the other person, from the past, finally from a place that can be called home.
