Warsaw espresso. Phenomenal Old Warsaw

The origins of Warsaw are hidden in the darkness of history and it is not easy to reach them. In a way, this creates a fascinating situation of discovering them, a beautifully smelling adventure. Therefore, we invite those interested in the history of Warsaw to discover it together.

To begin with, let's figure out what we know. We know that most of the official documents were lost during the wars, visual materials describing the city are missing, personal letters as well. How can we talk about the beginnings of Warsaw? What to rely on, what to use?

A historian, specialist in the history of the Old Town, Krzysztof Zwierz, will lead us through the extremely difficult to describe period of the founding of the city. He will tell us what we know for sure, what remains further in the circle of hypotheses, and what we can guess by comparing Warsaw with other cities created at the same time.

Krzysztof Zwierz - historian, since 2008 employed at the Historical Museum of Warsaw (ob. Museum of Warsaw, in the Department of Research on the History of Warsaw and Collections). Author and co-author of exhibitions on various aspects related to the identity of the city and co-organizer of scientific conferences devoted to Warsaw. He deals with space, local government, communities and immigration to Warsaw in the 16th and 17th centuries. He is a collaborator of the Varsavianist Research Team at the IH PAN. His doctoral thesis (2018) was devoted to the influence of the parliamentary function of Warsaw on the development of the city in the 16th and 17th centuries. He was a lecturer at the postgraduate studies of Varsavian Studies of the Faculty of History of the University of Warsaw. Co-author and participant of the work on the Warsaw Historical Atlas.
