What would the world look like if it weren't for mushrooms? Why might these very organisms have been the dominant form of life hundreds of millions of years ago, and how is it possible that we know only 10% of their species today? What makes them able to digest materials that are inaccessible to most living things — from hardwood to plastics? Check it out on October 16 and 23 during the adult workshop!
Although on a daily basis we associate them mainly with forest walks and a tasty side dish in the kitchen, mushrooms are an unusual group of organisms of crucial importance for our planet. During the meetings, we will take a closer look at unusual adaptive mechanisms, as well as the biology and chemistry of fungi. We will find out how their evolution affected the exit of plants to land, what role they play in medicine and industry, and why without them the forest ecosystem would simply cease to function.
during the workshops, among others
you will see mushrooms up close under a microscope and binoculars
you will conduct an experiment showing the effects of digestive enzymes
you will check in practice why the filamentous structure of the hyphae gives mushrooms an advantage in controlling the environment
you will discover amazing adaptations and strategies of the mushroom kingdom
