The works of Adolph Menzel show the range of artistic trends of the nineteenth century and the spectrum of interests of artists of that time. Despite his belief in the primacy of historical themes in painting, the artist did not remain indifferent to the dynamically changing contemporary world. His pencil and brush with equal mastery depicted the history of Frederick II, as well as the rushing railway or the interior of an iron mill. Menzel studied with the same precision the statue of the faun in the palace chamber, the hand of a blacksmith and the summer sun in the spa, proving that he was no stranger to history textbooks, contemporary social issues or fashionable Japanese woodcuts.
