How does a portrait change when the photographer decides how the other person will be portrayed, and when the subject takes control of his or her own image? Closeness, distance, gaze and photographing others will be discussed and worked on during a one-day photography workshop led by Sebastian Michałuszko. The meeting will take place on October 17, 2026 from 10:00 to 16:00 in the educational rooms of Villa Caro, as part of the Month of Photography in Gliwice.
The starting point for the workshop is this year's theme of Photography Month - intimacy. Participants will look at the relationship between the photographer and the photographed and consider who actually decides the final shape of the portrait. What does a portrait reveal, each element of which was arranged by the person being photographed? And what does the photo show, formed from a completely independent vision of another person?
An important local reference will be the “Sociological Record” by Zofia Rydet, present in the collection of the Museum in Gliwice. The series of portraits taken in the home space of the interlocutors will become the starting point for reflection on the closeness and distance in the relationship between the photographer and the photographed. During the workshop, this question will be transferred from the space of the house to the city.
The practical part will take place outside the museum - in the nearest urban space chosen by the participants. It is there that they will work on the portrait, experimenting with different ways of looking and checking what happens to the photographed image when the person making the decisions about the frame changes.
Each participant will end the workshop with two portraits of himself: one created by his own direction and one created on the basis of a completely independent, others' vision. The comparison of both photographs will allow us to look at the issues of authorship, control over one's own image and the limits of photographic intimacy.
The workshop does not require prior photographic experience. Participants work with their own equipment: a camera or a smartphone.
The workshops are intended for adults and young people from 15 years of age. Registration is valid at the telephone number: 783 560 006.
Cost: 20 PLN/person
