About the event

As part of the project, workshops will be held dedicated to learning and improving the traditional technique of making paper flowers fixed with wax. It is a unique form of folk handicraft that has been an important part of the local tradition for years and has been passed down from generation to generation. Waxed flowers are a unique, now disappearing form of traditional tissue printing. Such flowers years ago were used to decorate the graves of the dead, to create burial bunches.

During the workshop, participants will learn about the next stages of flower creation — from the preparation of tissue paper and individual elements, through their shaping and joining, to waxing and composing traditional floral tombstone decorations. Classes will be an opportunity to learn about old handicraft techniques, as well as to improve skills in practice under the guidance of experienced creators.

The workshops will be led by Małgorzata Matug — Master, folk artist, instructor of the East Cracow region and regionalist, winner of the Roman Reinfuss Award for merits in the protection and popularization of cultural heritage, and Katarzyna Mierzyńska — Pupil, craftswoman and enthusiast of folk culture.

The main goal of the project is to preserve and preserve the traditional skill of making paper flowers fixed with wax, as well as passing it on to subsequent generations. The project is an important element of activities for the preservation of intangible cultural heritage and reminds of the work of our grandmothers, whose value goes beyond the artistic dimension, being a testimony of ancient customs, sensitivity and local identity.

The project is implemented as part of the “Master-Student” scholarship program of the National Institute of Culture and Rural Heritage, funded by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.
