Images shape how we encounter each other — and how we misunderstand one another. In the next Museum and Inclusion working group, we will focus on anti-Muslim racism: its historical roots in Orientalism, its traces in Mölln, Solingen, Rostock and Hanau, and its effectiveness in everyday life.

About the event

Images shape how we encounter each other — and how we misunderstand one another. In the next Museum and Inclusion working group, we will focus on anti-Muslim racism: its historical roots in Orientalism, its traces in Mölln, Solingen, Rostock and Hanau, and its effectiveness in everyday life.

What is it about?

Together, we collect words and associations about discrimination and approach the meaning of “Islam” beyond ascribed images. The focus is on a workshop on the visual worlds of Islam: We look at representations, classify impressions and work together on how images form reality — and how this reality can be changed.

The event is aimed at everyone, in particular cultural workers and museum makers — from management, curators to administrative staff and supervisory staff. Openness to a learning attitude counts more than expertise.

Guest: Meyad Sarsour-Ndaye

Meyad Sarsour-Ndaye is a deaf Muslim-Palestinian artist, filmmaker, education and inclusion expert. She studied women and gender studies as well as special education in Tel Aviv and worked there for many years with Arab doves and deafblind people. She was particularly committed to the education, self-determination and independence of deaf women. She also supported the linguistic documentation of village sign language in her home town of Kafr Qasim. Meyad currently lives in Germany, works in a youth club for deaf young people and gives lectures on the topics of deaf people in Palestine and Israel, Palestinian culture, anti-Muslim racism and women's rights in Islam. She is also currently working as an artist on a film project that focuses on the experiences, language and stories of Palestinian deaf people.

Language: The event will be held in German Sign Language (DGS) and translated into spoken language.

Meeting point: Haus Bastian Participation is free of charge. Haus Bastian is barrier-free accessible. Limited number of participants. Registration required.

When Wednesday, October 21, 2016, 16:00 — 18:00 Where? Bastian House

Images influence how we see other people. Sometimes these images are wrong or unfair. That is called anti-Muslim racism.

In this meeting, we look at pictures about Islam and Muslims together. We ask ourselves: What do these pictures show? And what is true about it?

We're also looking at the story. There were many attacks on Muslims in Germany. For example in Mölln, Solingen and Hanau. That was and is racism.

Together, we collect words about discrimination. And we're talking about the meaning of the word “Islam.”

Our guest is Meyad Sarsour-Ndaye. She is an artist, filmmaker, and education and inclusion expert. She is deaf and comes from Palestine. She lives in Germany now. She talks about her work and experiences.

The event is in German Sign Language (DGS). There is a translation into spoken language.

Attendance is free of charge. Haus Bastian is barrier-free. Places are limited. Please sign in
