About the event

We invite you to an author's meeting with Beata and Paweł Pomykalski — travelers, authors of sightseeing guides and travel books, who will take us on an extraordinary journey through Venice — one of the most fascinating cities in the world. The meeting is implemented as part of the project “Literature without borders” co-financed by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage from the Fund for the Promotion of Culture.

The event will take place on November 9, 2026 (Monday) at 17:00 in the reading room of the Main Library at 11 Franciszkańska Street (1st floor).

Admission is free.

The starting point for the meeting will be the book “Venice. Faces of the city on the water”, in which the authors discover the lesser-known, often surprising stories of the famous city on the lagoon. We will find out why it was Venice that gave the world the concepts of “ghetto” and “quarantine”, what Dante, Casanova and Vivaldi have in common with its history, and why the portrait of one of the Venetian Doges was painted black. There will also be stories about everyday life in a city built on water. How did Venice come about and how has it functioned for centuries without traditional streets? How do its residents cope with transport, supplies or daily duties? And how is mass tourism changing the face of this unique place today?

We invite you to a meeting full of interesting stories, historical riddles and travel discoveries that will allow you to look at Venice from a completely new perspective.
