“Berlin is fashion! “, it was said in 1927. “Fashion artists” were stars, couture houses enthralled with visionary designs. The press wrote that their names were “so popularly spoken as if they were not fashion houses, but movie stars or stage favorites.” After January 30, 1933, nothing was the same as before. Admired designers were now considered pariahs. The National Socialists persecuted them as Jews, homosexuals and democrats, depriving them of their bourgeois existence, their companies, and their lives. A loss that still has an effect today.
The stories of Joe Strassner, Erna Becker, Clara Böhm, Recha Hirschfeld and Richard Götz exemplify the destruction of Berlin's fashion world, testifying to moving fates, brutal persecution and new successes in emigration.
