Opening of the exhibition “Gdańsk sketches. Theater, city, stage”

The exhibition will feature sketches created during several unique events. We will see the works made by the participants during two rehearsals of the performances of the Shakespeare Festival 2026, to which the artists were invited with their own sketchbooks. The audience will look not only at the stage, but also into the world of theatrical rehearsals — moments usually inaccessible to the viewer, captured through quick drawing, watercolor, ink and personal notes.

The exhibition will be complemented by works created during the January meeting of Urban Sketchers Gdańsk at the Gdańsk Shakespeare Theatre and selected sketches from the exhibition “Gdańsk Sketches”, presented in December 2025 at the stadium in Gdańsk.

This is a record of a city seen by many different people. Not photographic documentation, but a collection of individual observations: architecture, scene, actors, audience, movement, light and atmosphere of the moment. Urban sketching is based on drawing on the spot, with direct observation. Therefore, each of the presented sketches is at the same time an artistic work and a visual document of a specific place and moment.

The exhibition is also a summary of the cooperation of the urban sketcher community with the Gdańsk Shakespeare Theatre and an invitation to look at the theatre and Gdańsk from a completely different perspective — through an open sketcher.
