The exhibition is a collection of oil paintings in which a woman becomes not only a model, but a subject most worthy of a brush. They invite us to look attentively at the light, the colour, the fleetingness of the moment captured as the masters of impressionism did. Painting here is not merely a reproduction of what is visible; it is an attempt to stop the beauty that passes away.
Grzegorz Sorbian's adventure with art began in the first grade of high school, with an order for a series of portraits of outstanding Polish scientists for a chemical laboratory. A dozen works of A4 format, made in pen and ink, hung — with the full approval of the pedagogical group — in the chemistry room. This youthful success resulted in an interest in plastic art in the artist. Pencil, pastels followed, and finally attempts to combine pen and ink with colour, inspired by Tadeusz Gronowski's illustrations to Mr Tadeusz from the 1950 edition. Then there was a multi-year hiatus.
A new stage began with the untouched oil paints accidentally found in the house, once bought by Mr. Gregory's brother. It was the time of a relationship with the Beautiful Girl from Mazovia that lasted to this day — and therefore the time when the artist gained his model. Further searches led through watercolor and acrylic, through decoupage, wood carving, painting on glass and ceramics. However, he did not find himself in any of these techniques. There was oil left.
As a historian with a passion for art history, he became fascinated by the works of former masters, especially the Impressionists. He didn't complain about his own style, there was rather ordinary joy when things worked out, and bitter disappointment when they didn't. Stubbornness led to the fact that after years things began to be quite banal, for an amateur. He remembers moments when he could hardly distinguish the original from his own copy, but also those when, in bitterness, he painted pictures that did not meet his imagination.
He had his first exhibition in Krapkowice, the next in Modlin, together with Lucyna Pomianowska. This is the third, according to the artist's idea — the final one.
Why does he paint? Because “some internal compulsion will make him feel compelled.” As a peer of Edward Stachury, he once took to heart His words: “It's too late, it's not too late.” It's never too late for love, it's never too late for art. And why are women the main focus? He answers with the question: and is there a subject more worthy of a brush?
The exhibition will last until 19.11.2026.
