It's like Witkacy himself exhibited in our ProWizorium Gallery. This time Grzegorz Stankiewicz's painting will be exhibited in the exhibition entitled “Farewell to Autumn. In search of creative anxiety.
Exhibition “Farewell to Autumn. In search of creative anxiety.” is a real treat for all admirers of Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz. It is this iconic artist for Polish art that Grzegorz Stankiewicz is inspired by - the hero of the upcoming exhibition.
We invite you to its opening on November 6, 2026 at 18:00 at the ProWizorium Gallery. In the meantime, read What a little about the author of the exhibition and his adventures with Witkacy:
For Grzegorz Stankiewicz, the meeting with Witkacy began with literature. Over time, the fascination with his work turned into the need to face his painting as well. As Stankiewicz himself admits, Witkacy reminded him of something fundamental: a bit of madness, without which nothing really creative is created.
Thus was born a cycle of works that are more than copies of famous portraits.
Stankiewicz tries to get to the energy of the original. While maintaining an extraordinary attention to detail, he seeks at the same time the dynamics of the line, the expression of color and the emotion hidden in the faces of the models. The signatures, symbols and inscriptions characteristic of Witkacy are not an addition here, they remain an inte-grail part of the painting, as important as the gaze, gesture or features of the person portrayed. The colors de-gain the intensity that time has taken away from many preserved originals. Precision meets freedom, discipline meets intuition, and faithful reproduction meets the personal experience of the contemporary creator.
It is no coincidence that discipline and creative anxiety meet in Grzegorz Stankiewicz's play. His biography is far from the stereotypical biography of the artist. He graduated from the Main Fire Service School in Warsaw (today's Fire Academy). He worked as a professional fire service for 30 years. He was, among others, the head of diving works of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and a lecturer in rescue tactics in the field of chemical rescue, and for the last eleven years of service he headed the School of Aspirants of the State Fire Service in Poznań.
He is also a Doctor of Humanities in the field of pedagogy and has been associated with the Faculty of Educational Studies of the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań for many years.
He has been drawing since childhood, but it is the portraits inspired by Witkacy that have become one of the strongest accents of his artistic path. The meeting of technical precision, the experience of a man working in the world of rigor and responsibility and artistic sensitivity brings a special result. Copying Witkacy's paintings does not become for Stankiewicz his own “exercise of the hand”, but above all an exercise in the gaze. Trying to reconcile accuracy with dynamics. Control with spontaneity. I'm fine with anxiety.
Looking at his paintings, one gets the impression that Witkacy returns for a moment, not as a museum classic locked in the history of art, but as a living, provocative presence.
However, Stankiewicz is not trying to become a Witkacy. He follows in his footsteps in order to approach through painting not only the artist and painter, but also the man who, throughout his life, crossed the boundaries between intellectual order and creative madness.
