Vernisage: Understanding Life

Tarnowskie Cerntrum Kultury invites you to the TCK Gallery for an exhibition of photographs by Tadeusz Koniarz “Understanding Life”, where the author will present 14 photoreports and individual photographs created over the course of a decade. This selection of works creates a multi-threaded portrait of reality seen up close, without embellishment and without indifference, and at the same time with an attentiveness that allows us to see in seemingly ordinary moments their extraordinary significance.

“Understanding Life” is a retrospective journey through the last decade of the work of Tadeusz Koniarz, photojournalist and documentary filmmaker. The presented frames combine classic reportage with an insightful look at the other person. His photography is not looking for a sensation — it is looking for a man. It is part of the humanistic and socially committed current; it is authentic, it shows everyday life, loneliness and the experience of exclusion, but also dignity and strength, often captured in black and white. All the pictures presented at the exhibition have been awarded in national and international competitions.

Tadeusz Koniarz — Tarnowian, photojournalist and educator — has been professionally engaged in photography since 1986. It documents social life, cultural events and people, especially those whose daily lives remain outside the mainstream of media attention. He cooperates with the REPORTER Agency, the magazine “Foto-Kurier” and the weekly “TEMI”. He is the winner of the first prizes in prestigious press photography competitions such as Grand Press Photo and BZ WBK Press Foto, as well as in the National Geographic competitions, “Love man” in Oświęcim and “Zestaw” in Świdnica. In 2018, the Association of Polish Journalists awarded him the Erazm Ciołek Award for his socially engaged photoreport entitled “World without color”. For the intervention material “Bez” he received the title of Photojournalist of Małopolska in 2017. He also won two FIAP Gold Medals in the Just One Photo competition (Jarosław 2016 and 2017). Tadeusz Koniarz's photographs were presented at thirty individual exhibitions. Over the years, he willingly shared his passion with the younger generation in Tarnów educational institutions — in the Youth Palace, the Technical School Complex and the State Lyceum of Fine Arts. He is also the author of award-winning short films. He was a co-founder and long-time patron of the Amateur Film Club “Szwenk”, which was awarded the Gold Medal by the UNICA organization, operating under the auspices of UNESCO. For his artistic and cultural activities he was honored, among others, with the City of Tarnów Awards, the TEMI Cultural Award, the Winged statuette and state awards.
