What makes a home stand out? How do the people a person talks to shape the stories they tell about themselves? And which objects, places, memories and relationships become tools for understanding one's own identity?

About the event

What makes a home stand out? How do the people a person talks to shape the stories they tell about themselves? And which objects, places, memories and relationships become tools for understanding one's own identity?

Where Stories Become Heimaten presents texts created as part of a three-part workshop for collective autobiographical writing by BIPoC and queer diasporic people in Berlin. Through autobiographical writing practice, conversations and joint reflection, the participants addressed questions about home, migration, queerness, identity, belonging and memory. The individual workshop dates were based on three different starting points: A house is not a home, a conversation with 000 and props of identity. Based on these impulses, personal stories were created in different forms, voices and languages, each shaped by the experiences and decisions of the individual authors.

At the House of World Cultures, participants present selected contributions from this process in a format of their choice. The readings take on different forms and reflect the participants' various ideas of how their texts should be presented, heard and experienced.

In addition to presenting the texts, the publication resulting from the workshop will be presented, which brings together the individual contributions in printed form.

Instead of a uniform narrative about the experiences of queer migrants from BIPoC communities, the event offers space for diverse, sometimes overlapping, sometimes contradictory ways of remembering, belonging, and telling personal stories.

Organized by Korea-Verband e. V. in cooperation with Haus der Kulturen der Welt as part of the local festival for plural democracy
