Tate Britain presents the first major European exhibition in 30 years of the work of James McNeill Whistler, one of the most original and influential artists of the 19th century.
The film brings this unique exhibition to the big screen, allowing you to take a close look at the artist's work and learn about the history behind his works. Whistler, a bold experimenter and contemporary of the Impressionist, consistently challenged the artistic conventions of his era, developing the idea of “art for art” and seeking a connection between painting and music. He described his paintings as “arrangement”, “harmony” or “nocturnes”, among others.
This is a unique opportunity to see up close the works of one of the most important artists of his era, including the famous Portrait of the Artist's Mother, and discover his influence on subsequent generations of artists. The film allows us to look at Whistler not only as the author of iconic paintings, but also as an artist who redefined the way of thinking about art
