About the event

Maria Lemperk's “Dating Rocks” is a performance that grew out of the long-term processional project “Kissing a Rock”. Through performance and para-theatre experiments, site-specific activities and publications, the artist creates a space to explore topics related primarily to (eco) sexuality.

The starting point is the actions of “taping with stones”, around which ambiguous narratives are created referring both to fluid sexuality and — more broadly — to the process of identity formation. An integral element of each activity are stations, which serve as places for mapping personal experiences and issues relevant to the artist. The performance invites the audience to witness intimacy — participation and openness to new ways of bodily experience and building relationships.

In the context of the program “I see (l) them. Women's Art” Mariia Lemperk undertakes the queerization of the politics of the body and raises the question of the limits of belonging and representation. As a non-binary person, she reflects on who can speak on behalf of women and get involved in activities for their visibility. At the same time, he points out that social resistance to exclusion also includes the struggle to recognize sexuality, pleasure and bodily experience as full-fledged areas of freedom and expression. In this perspective, pleasure becomes a language of resistance to norms that define the limits of what is considered acceptable, visible and represented.

mariia Lemperk is an artistic person (they/them, her/her, he/she) from Odessa (Ukraine), whose work develops on the border between the politics of memory and the body. Recently, they have focused on (non) controlled spaces of pain, performative archives, and the deconstruction of gender and queer presence in today's political-cultural chaos.
