About the event

The cultural history of Japan is full of extraordinary female characters — artists, poets, writers and heroines of historical tales and legends. Their presence in Japanese culture seems paradoxical — although they have played an important role in it, they often situate themselves outside the mainstream of stories about the history of art and culture.

A good example is Murasaki Shikibu, author of The Tale of Prince Genji, a foundational work for Japanese culture that has inspired creators for more than a thousand years. Her case, however, is isolated: women artists, poets and characters unique in Japanese history are often found in the space “in between” — they are an important part of the culture, but their place in its history is not always obvious.

Professor Anna Król's lecture will be an attempt to take a fresh look at Japanese women artists from the perspective of the 21st century. It will touch on a phenomenon practically unknown: who were the women who created, inspired artists and influenced the culture of Japan?

The starting point for reflection will be the exhibition “Female Warriors. Japanese herstorie” presented at the Manggha Museum of Japanese Art and Technology, presenting the silhouettes of women who transcended the social roles assigned to them, and at the same time permanently inscribed in the canon of historical and legendary stories. Their stories allow us to look not only at the heroines themselves, but also at how narratives about women have been constructed over the centuries.

Author of more than two hundred exhibitions in Poland and abroad, problem and monographic, monographic catalogs, books, articles.
