The magnificent golden chandelier has been towering over the audience for more than 130 years. It is one of the first — and probably the most representative — lamps that lit up with electric light on Polish lands. How large and richly decorated it really is, you can see only when it is abandoned. The chandelier is three and a half meters in diameter and weighs 800 kilograms. This is a unique example of late 19th century design.

About the event

The magnificent golden chandelier has been towering over the audience for more than 130 years. It is one of the first — and probably the most representative — lamps that lit up with electric light on Polish lands. How large and richly decorated it really is, you can see only when it is abandoned. The chandelier is three and a half meters in diameter and weighs 800 kilograms. This is a unique example of late 19th century design.

Rarely, once every 2-3 years, the employees of the Theater manually, with the help of a crank, lower the chandelier, clean it and replace the bulbs. This is an extraordinary moment, which is why we want to share it with you. On October 25, we invite you to the ceremony of cleaning the chandelier and replacing the bulbs, which this year will be graced with a concert by the Representative Wind Orchestra of the Wieliczka Salt Mine!

Event plan: We will open the doors of the Theatre for you from 11.30 am. Then you will be able to explore the interiors and corners of our building. Public areas can be viewed by yourself. The route, which is more extensive and not normally accessible to spectators of the performances, can be set off in organized groups with a guide - at 11.30 and 12.00 (it is also possible to sign up for a special guided tour aimed primarily at children - at 12.30).

At 13.30 the most solemn part of the event will begin. Then the chandelier will go up and you will drive for the next 90 minutes - you can buy tickets only for this part of the event. During this time, the Representative Wind Orchestra of the Wieliczka Salt Mine will play for you. We have also prepared special attractions related to the Curtain of Women and the completed major renovation of the roof of the Theatre. The concert will end at 15.30, when the chandelier returns to its target, honorable place above the heads of the spectators.

Throughout the duration of the event at the promotional stand of the Salt Mine in Wieliczka it will be possible to get acquainted with its tourist and medicinal activities.

Much more will happen in the theater on this day!

TWO NEW NAMES ON THE WOMEN'S CURTAIN The Women's Curtain story continues! Dorota Seydenman and Aniela Steinberg will join the 130 women commemorated at the event. We'll reveal their embroidered names. Who were they and why? We will tell you on October 25th. In addition, the premiere will be an exceptional publication dedicated to the Curtain of Women by Małgorzata Markiewicz. The album presents the stories of 130 outstanding Cracovians, tells about the idea of the project and shows in photographs the unusual process of creating the curtain.

SLOVAK IN SALT Our patron will also have his feast day on this day. We will reveal an unusual bust of Juliusz Słowacki made of salt — a gift from the Wieliczka Salt Mine.

NEW CLOCK — OLD AND NEW THEATRE IN ONE We will also present a unique clock created by Grzegorz A. Adamski and Kacpr Adamski. Its frame was made of copper sheet from the old roof of the Theatre, and the dial — from the material used in its new plating. The whole, of course, is decorated with the head of Medusa.

TAKE A PIECE OF THEATER WITH YOU On this day it will be possible to become the owner of one of the light bulbs that have illuminated our stage over the years. Each will receive a unique packaging sewn by theatrical seamstresses from the remnants of fabrics left over from the manufacture of costumes. A small item with a really big theatrical story.
