When a witch accidentally saves the lives of the ruler of Cintra Calanthe and her psychically gifted daughter Pavetta, the Queen gratefully takes him to her court. Geralt attends a grand feast to lead to Pavetta's marriage to one of her well-to-do neighbors. The festivities are interrupted by the appearance of a steel-chained knight calling himself the Hedgehog, who claims to have exclusive rights to Pavetta's hand. He refers here to the old Law of Surprise. According to the Hedgehog's version, a dozen years earlier this knight saved Pavetta's father's life and in return swore what the ruler does not expect to find at home when he returns. The king agreed, not knowing that his wife was in a blessed state... before Geralt left the citra, he would also decide to face the Law of Surprise himself. Thus, his life will forever be inextricably linked with Ciri - the cork of Pavetta and Hedgehog.
