A choir of sailors from Holland wanders, an overture to Tannhäuser, dramatic scenes from Don Carlos and exotic music by Turandot — these are just some of the opera masterpieces that we will hear during the January concert of the Silesian Philharmonic Choir and Orchestra.

The program will feature some of the most recognizable choral passages in opera history. The chorus of sailors from Richard Wagner's opera The Dutchman Wanderer is a work in which the composer for the first time fully revealed his dramatic musical language and distinctive way of building musical tension. Next to it will be a monumental overture to the opera Tannhäuser, combining the elevated chorus of pilgrims with expressive passages inspired by the world of sensuality and theatrical drama.

There will also be music by Giuseppe Verdi and Giacomo Puccini — composers who made the choir one of the most important protagonists of the opera scene. The program will include a dramatic Auto-da-fé scene from Don Carlos Verdi's opera Don Carlos Verdi and an impressive chorus from Puccini's Turandot, in which the monumental sound of the orchestra and choir creates an atmosphere of mystery and tension.

The concert program will be complemented by compositions full of Viennese charm and operetta lightness. Among others, the famous Imperial Waltz by Johann Strauss II, Over the Beautiful Blue Danube - one of the most recognizable waltzes in the history of music - and the brilliant overtures and marches of Franz von Suppé, the composer called one of the fathers of the Viennese operetta, will be played.

A special place will also be occupied by the Three Polish Dances from Jan Stefani's opera Miracle Mniemany, or Krakowiacy i Górale by Jan Stefani — a work recognized as the first Polish national opera. The composition, combining elements of folk music with classical stage form, became one of the symbols of Polish musical culture of the end of the 18th century.

The concert of the Great Choirs and Overtures will be an evening full of monumental sounds, operatic drama and dance elegance — from Wagner's exuberance, through the Italian expression of Verdi and Puccini, to the Viennese brilliance of Strauss's music.
