Wielkopolska Festival of Music and Visual Arts “Ex Tempore” is a proposal for the first interdisciplinary artistic project in Poland combining classical music with a picture created by a live artist during a concert. The festival consists of three performances entitled “Between Soul and Body”, taking place in historically important historical buildings of Wielkopolska.
During the concerts, one of the most recognizable works of the great German Baroque composer — Jan Sebastian Bach — Das Wohltemperierte Klavier — will be presented in the original version by Magdalena Karolak for a quartet of historical wind instruments and harpsichords. The performances will be enriched by the artist Jan Kałuzhny, drawing live paintings inspired by the art of the Dutch painter and graphic artist Maurits Cornelis Escher (1898-1972), referring to the polyphonic works of the Baroque master with the “impossible architecture” depicted on them.
On stage, the Polish-Italian historical instrument ensemble Piffari brings this intricate sound structure to life. Their interpretation becomes an inspiration for the artist cartoonist, who creates a visual reflection of Bach's music live. His work focuses on drawing architectural elements, which is a direct reference to the idea of constructing. However, these visual “bricks” do not always appear in accordance with the classical rules of construction or the expected, realistic order. Sometimes the cartoonist, like the composer, allows himself deviations and improvisations, leading the imagination astray, where logic gives way to creative freedom. This meeting of Bach's rigorous form with the artistic freedom of the draftsman shows that even the most predictable constructions can conceal unexpected corners of the imagination, transcending mathematical precision in favor of a unique aesthetic. In this way, Bach's music and the art of drawing together build a new space of experience, where sound and image complement each other, creating a coherent whole.
