An important contribution to the development of bassoon chamber literature is made by numerous transcriptions and elaborations, which since the 19th century have significantly expanded the repertoire of this instrument. Although its core consists of original compositions — from the sonatas of Mozart, Weber and Saint-Saëns to the works of Tansman and Kalivoda — adaptations of opera and popular music have taken an equally permanent place. This practice has been a frequent occurrence since early Romanticism, as evidenced by Rossini's elaboration of an aria from Cyrulik of Seville for two bassoons committed by François-René Gebauer just a few months after the opera's premiere. Later, the repertoire included numerous popular works, including Pavane Faurégo — which the composer himself composed in three versions — and My Favourite Things transformed into a jazz standard by John Coltrane. The richness of the bassoon chamber repertoire shows the extraordinary versatility of this instrument.
