Plac Defilad 1, Warszawa

A classic thriller, thick as smoke in a Parisian jazz club, in which the shape of the coming New Wave is drawn.

About the event

Listen to the movies.

Louis Malle's “Elevator to the Scaffold” (1958) not only paved the way for the French New Wave, but also combined cinema with jazz in an unprecedented way. This stylish crime noir, has gained immortality for many reasons, and one of them is undoubtedly the mesmerizing soundtrack by the genius of jazz himself - Miles Davis, whose 100th birthday falls exactly on May 26, 2026.
The music in this film is not just the background; Davis' trumpet becomes almost the inner voice of the characters, emphasizing their loneliness and the increasing fatalism of their location. Its creation is also associated with one of the most beautiful legends in the history of music. Davis, while in Paris, prepared the setting in just one night. The recording session was based on improvisation itself — the band watched looped parts of the film and reacted live to what was happening on the screen. The lack of preparation gave rise to a raw, melancholic sound that today is shrouded in legend and has delighted music lovers for decades.
The music with “Elevator to the Scaffold” has been recognized as one of the best soundtracks in history for years.

Reviews about the film:
A classic thriller, thick as smoke in a Parisian jazz club, in which the shape of the coming New Wave is drawn.
Michał Oleszczyk, SpoilerMaster

One of the most beautiful films about how an elevator can really change lives. And seriously: Elevator to the scaffold is a crime thriller about the dark side of love pulsating with a nervous jazz rhythm. And the music of Miles Davis — an iconic soundtrack that, like the film, does not age, but becomes more noble with time.
After hours. Robert Ziebinski

Malle very skillfully fuels the atmosphere of tension, using recorded “hot” jazz improvisations.
Alicja Helman, Crime Movie

The virtuoso stylistic concept makes Elevator to the Scaffold, in addition to its high class in the sensational genre, also has the value of an exquisite visual poem.
Adam Garbicz, Jacek Klinowski, Cinema, the magic vehicle. Feature Film Achievement Guide. The Second Voyage 1950-1959

Debut thriller with Hitchcock precision.
Jerzy Płażewski, The History of French Film

The plot here is only the first layer behind which there are many things that break the framework of the conventions of the crime film.
Wojciech Solarz, Film

The film, considered the beginning of the French New Wave in cinema, combines the author's look with inspirations from the classics published by Bresson and Hitchcock. The construction of the film is precise and free at the same time, based on classic suspense, but in the atmosphere you can feel an openness to another reality and the spiritual space of the characters.
