In his story “Winter Cruise,” W. Somerset Maugham uses a pointed pen to describe the annual recovery trip of an English lady on a German freighter in the 1920s. He caricatures Miss Reid's talkativeness and the ship's seemingly monosyllabic German crew. The clash of such different characters on board guarantees lots of fun.
Does the ideal Christmas exist? No matter how lovingly we plan it for family and friends, a broken mustard glass, a trip home by train or the same routine can really throw the holidays together. Kästner, Pillau and Fontane talk about it.
“Winter Cruise” is an easy, intelligent story, charmingly and profoundly explored by Hans-Jürgen Schatz.
MÄRKISCHE ODERZEITUNG
Schatz masterfully knew how to bring the people of this warm-hearted, humorous story of a boat trip to life through imitation of voices and gestures.
SCHWARZWÄLDER BOTE
The audience quickly noticed that the man knows something about his craft. Schatz is a gifted reader who is able to skilfully breathe life into a text. He was able to shine with the short story written by Maugham. It was more of an audio drama with a one-man cast than a classic recitation. This is how he successfully changed his voice when the various protagonists spoke in the story. Schatz brought the joke of the plot across authentically. The audience laughed in places. And that was precisely because the actor made sure that his listeners could dive into the lyrics.
