“Solo” by the leader of the bands Pink Freud and Wojtek Mazolewski Quintet is an intimate, extremely moody, almost cinematic story without words — touching love story of the artist and his instrument. We will hear this unique story in Blue Note.
The double bass in jazz often remains in the shadows, associated primarily with the role of a rhythmic foundation. Wojtek Mazolewski reverses this pattern, showing its melodic and expressive possibilities. With extraordinary attentiveness, and at times even tenderness, he discovers the richness and depth of the instrument's sound, creating music based on silence, gentle pulse and subtle changes of tension.
“Solo” requires the listener to stop and be mindful, but in return offers an experience close to meditation. The sparing form allows every sound to be heard, and the apparent simplicity leads to an intense, poetic experience.
Wojtek Mazolewski has been one of the most important figures on the Polish jazz scene for years and is also present on the international scene. His quintet's album “Polka” was among DownBeat magazine's favourite albums of the year, and the artist himself was a guest on Gilles Peterson's BBC programme, where he also recorded the acclaimed Brownswood Session. WMQ's latest album, “Live Spirit I”, received an enthusiastic reception from the international press, including Jazzwise, UK Vibe, Record Collector, All About Jazz, as well as Jazz Forum.
