About the event

The concert “SOLO” by Pink Freud and Wojtek Mazolewski Quintet is an intimate, extremely moody, almost cinematic story without words. A moving love story of the artist and his instrument.

The double bass is an instrument often underestimated in jazz — since Duke Ellington's big band, it has been given the place of a rhythmic foundation for the crazy performances of the masters of trumpet, percussion, piano. The leader of Pink Freud shows the double bass as a melodic instrument, with extraordinary attentiveness, not to say tenderness, discovering the richness and depth of its sound.

“SOLO” is a surprising album. Mazolewski's musical story captivates and fascinates, revealing unhurriedly sonorous and compositional details. The musician opens up a space of concentration and reflection before us, without slipping into a new-age cliché.

“SOLO” is also a proposal that encourages the listener to make a little effort, offering a new kind of experience in return. As in Zen meditation, silence, gentle pulse and sonic vibrations lead to an understanding of the complexity of nature and our place in it, paradoxically leading to an intense aesthetic, poetic in essence, experience.

Mazolewski has been a respected figure on the international music scene for years. His quintet's album, “Polka”, was among the favorite records of the year according to DownBeat. He was a frequent guest on Gilles Peterson's show on the BBC, where he also recorded the memorable Brownswood Session. This year's Wojtek Mazolewski Quintet album, “Live Spirit I”, won international recognition, garnering rave reviews from, among others, Jazzwise, UK Vibe, Record Collector, All About Jazz and Jazz Forum.
