What do you use to cure a tarantula's venomous bite? With dancing! In Apulia in southern Italy, this painful injury has been treated with ritual dances, the so-called “pizzica tarantata”, since the late 14th century. Through ecstatic dancing to a trance, the poison is said to be sweated out of the body. Whether this is scientifically sustainable remains to be seen, but the “Tarantella” has given musical culture wonderful, exciting dances. The group Canzoniere Grecanico Salentino has specialized in this form of music and has been creating the best atmosphere for over 50 years — with both traditional and contemporary sounds and with energetic dances.
