TRIBUTE TO HENRYK MAJEWSKI

2016 marked the 80th anniversary of the birth of Henryk Majewski — trumpeter, composer, educator, one of the leading figures of Polish jazz. He was the creator and leader of such formations as: Old Timers, Big Band “Barn” and Swing Session. Co-creator and director of the Jazz Faculty at the F.Chopin Music School Complex in Warsaw. The post-secondary Jazz Studies created at this school bears his name.

Director of many jazz festivals, including Jazz Jamboree, Złota Tarka and long-time President of PSJ. On the occasion of the aforementioned anniversary, Henryk's son Robert Majewski, a leading Polish jazz trumpeter, created a project dedicated to his memory. He invited outstanding jazzmen to participate in it, who for many years collaborated with Henryk Majewski. The concert program consists of compositions by Henryk and Robert Majewski and several jazz standards. The album “Tribute To Henryk Majewski” won the FRYDERYK 2017 award in the category of jazz album of the year.

ROBERT MAJEWSKI — one of the most outstanding Polish jazz trumpeters, composer and arranger. He comes from a family with deep musical traditions — his father, Henryk Majewski, was a respected jazz trumpeter, and his brother Wojciech is a renowned pianist.

Robert graduated from the Academy of Music in Warsaw in 1987, and began his career in the eighties, playing among others in the Big Band of Polish Radio under the direction of Andrzej Trzaskowski. Throughout his career, he has collaborated with world jazz stars including Bobo Stenson, Palle Danielsson, Joey Baron, Roy Hargrove and Clark Terry.

His achievements include numerous albums, of which “Robert Majewski Plays Komeda” (1996), dedicated to the work of Krzysztof Komeda, and “My One and Only Love” (2011), for which he received Fryderyk Award for Jazz Album of the Year. In 2016, he released the album “Tribute to Henryk Majewski”, a tribute to his father, which was also nominated for Fryderyk.

Majewski is also a recognized educator, conducts workshops and teaches in music schools. His influence on the development of young Polish jazzmen is not to be overestimated. Robert Majewski has also made a significant contribution to Polish film music. He participated in the creation of soundtracks for films and theatrical performances, collaborating with such composers as Zbigniew Preisner, Krzesimir Dębski, Jerzy Satanowski and Michał Lorenc. His distinctive trumpet sound has brought a unique jazz mood to many productions.

In 1991, Majewski not only played the trumpet, but also played the main role in the film “Pogłos” directed by Andrzej Jakimowski. The film won an award at the Jazz Film Saloon festival in Warsaw, which further highlighted his versatility as an artist. Thanks to his many years of career and versatility, Robert Majewski remains one of the most important figures on the Polish scene

ANDRZEJ JAGODZIŃSKI - pianist, accordionist, horn player, composer and arranger.

He has always been interested in classical music. Initially, his music career was typical of a classical musician. He passed all levels of music education. While still studying at the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in Warsaw, he took part in the French horn class at the Polish Radio and TV Orchestra in Warsaw, where he played for five years. During his studies, he became interested in jazz music. He taught her by playing the piano. Over time, he devoted himself mainly to this style. Almost from the beginning of his jazz career, he collaborated with leading Polish jazz bands: among others. Old Timers, Swing Session, String Connection, Zbigniew Namysłowski Quartet, Janusz Muniak Quartet, Quintessence, Jan Ptaszyn Wróblewski Quartet. In 1987 he started working with Ewa Bem, the leading Polish jazz singer.

In 1993 he created the classic jazz trio that still exists today. In addition to the leader, it consists of double bass player Adam Cegielski and drummer Czesław “Mały” Bartkowski. Referring to his classical roots and using several years of experience as a jazz musician, A. Jagodziński created a project combining these two musical worlds. In 1994, the CHOPIN CD with jazz arrangements of F. Chopin's music was released. The album was recognized by the readers of Jazz Forum magazine as the album of the year 1994, received the Polish Music Industry Award — Fryderyk '94 and the Laur Melomani '94 — the award of the Łódź Association of Music Lovers. This project has become a pass and invitation to the music scenes of the whole world. This success cemented Andrzej Jagodziński's belief in the correctness of choosing an artistic path combining jazz with classics and prompted the artist to develop it.

Based on the game, the Jazz Trio began to invite to perform his compositions and works, which he arranged classical musicians, instrumentalists, and vocalists, as well as chamber orchestras. The culmination of his sonic and compositional research was his Piano Concerto in G minor for jazz trio and grand symphony orchestra, as well as a classically constructed Requiem for jazz trio, three jazz vocalists and a classical mixed choir. Another inspiration for Jagodziński was the music of polyphony master Jan Sebastian Bach. The result is a CD released in 2020 entitled ANDRZEJ JAGODZIŃSKI TRIO-BACH. In parallel, a project was created with jazz arrangements of J.S.Bach's works for jazz quartet and orchestra of early instruments. Parallel to the strictly musical inspirations, the composer, together with the poet Wiesława Sujkowska, found creative potential in the texts of the 10 Commandments. Based on this inspiration, in the first half of 2021, a verbal-musical piece was created in the form of a ten-part suite entitled Decalogue of Songs for a Better Life.In 2025, in cooperation with poet, painter and songwriter Jan Wołek, an author's project “Jagodziński-Wołek” was created.
