Twelve years after the premiere and the great triumph during the 7th edition of the Divine Comedy and a year after the revival for the Television Theatre, Wycinka Holzfällen returns to Krakow — Krystian Lupa's legendary performance realized at the Polish Theatre in Wrocław based on the novel by Thomas Bernhard. Since its premiere in 2014, the show has been screened at festivals in France, China, Japan, Korea, the Czech Republic, Chile and Brazil, among others. Along with Erasure, the cut is one of the most outstanding Bernhard performances of Lupa.
In the performance, we look at the artistic cream of Vienna during a gala dinner, for which the main guest - an actor of the National Theater - is several hours late. The meeting, during which the tension between the guests grows dangerously all the time, becomes an opportunity to look at the mechanisms that govern the art world. In turn, for the main character — Thomas — it is a vehicle of introspection, in which he looks at the beginnings of his own creative path and remembers Joana, a deceased artist and friend. In Wycinka Bernhard created characters inspired by real people from the artistic community, which resulted in one of the many scandals for which his work became famous.
Wycinka is an even more moving performance today, as we see in it excellent actors and actresses (among others Halina Rasiakówna, Ewa Skibińska, Marta Zięba, Anna Ilczuk) who, as a result of political decisions to change the director, had to leave their theatre. The performance is therefore not only a renewal of the premiere of years ago, today it is seen as a reconstruction of an artistic reality that years ago was destroyed with calculation.
