Amedeo Modigliani is one of the most colorful and tragic figures of Parisian bohemia of the early 20th century. His work still fascinates millions of fans, and the works reach dizzying amounts at auctions - the famous “Nu couché” sold in 2015 for an impressive 175 million dollars!
It is hard to believe that during his lifetime “Modi” sold his works for only 5 francs or a glass of wine.
When he arrived in Paris in 1906, he was a sublime elegance. He quickly became a legend of Montparnasse — a rebellious artist adored by women. However, behind this colorful image there was a dark side: stimulants, deep loneliness and self-destruction. As he called himself, he was a pintre maudit — “cursed painter.”
Does Modigliani really deserve the adoration we have for his art today? And the most important question: how did it happen that a painter focused almost exclusively on portraits created only one self-portrait in his entire life, just before his death? What did he want to hide in him, and what to confess to the world?
We will learn the answers during a fascinating lecture, during which Jarosław “Jarry” Jaworski (Head of Mocna Kultura) will take us on an unusual journey.
