The turn of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries was a period of fundamental changes in the organization and functioning of the European armed forces. The gradual decline in the importance of traditional chivalry, the development of enlisted troops, and the search for new organizational and tactical solutions led to the formation of different military models. In individual European countries, this process proceeded at different speeds and took different forms, examples of which were the Italian condottieri, the German landsknechts and the Spanish tercios.
During the lecture Prof. Aleksander Bołdiriw will present the transformations taking place in the military of the Kingdom of Poland against the background of wider European processes. Particular attention will be paid to the transformations of military structures on the border of the Middle Ages and the modern period and the possibilities of their interpretation in the light of the theory of military revolution.
Prof. Aleksander Bołdiriw — historian, employee of the Department of Medieval History at the University of Lodz. He specialises in the military history of the Jagiellonian era, the material culture of the military and the economic aspects of warfare. Author and publisher of eight books and several dozen scientific articles. Member of the Military History Team of the Committee of Historical Sciences of the Polish Academy of Sciences.
