The Kashubian language is a complete phenomenon in serious music. It was used in the cycle of songs WòloBòskofor baritone and piano by the contemporary composer Łukasz Godila. The choice of lyrics and melodies of traditional Kashubian songs on which the piece is based was made by singer Damian Wilma, who comes from the region and is fascinated by its culture.
This series has been arranged into a coherent story about the unhappy love of Hanushka and Jasko. Young people get to know each other by chance by the stream and immediately fall in love with each other. Love blooms, the boyfriend asks Hanushka's parents for permission to marry, these seemingly agree to it, although they postpone the ceremony due to the young age of the bride. Soon after, Jaśko hears about announcements informing about Hanuszka's engagement to another man. The young man appears in the church at the wedding, his beloved explains her decision with divine judgments, which cannot be opposed. Yasko is unable to live without Hanushka and throws herself into the sea. She, seeing a dead body on the water, also decides to take her own life. Lovers are buried in separate graves, but the power of their love makes them grow intertwining lilies. They are cut by Hanushka's angry mother, who persecutes her lovers even after death. Unexpectedly, blood flows from the stems.
The stage version of the work was prepared by Jarosław Kilian, who emphasizes the metaphysical dimension of the story dealing with the theme of love, destiny and death. In his idea, the series is a flashback of a woman extracting from her memory a story of unhappy falling in love. The young man appears as a Ghost, who weaves a story about his fate from the afterlife. Is this the story of this particular couple? Or maybe a universal story told for centuries, this time in a coastal Kashubian setting?
God's Will may be of interest to both music lovers who value tradition and those looking for novelty. The inspiration of serious music with folk songs is part of the trend of romantic artistic research, while the love story presented in the songs resembles the Beautiful Mill, the famous cycle of Franz Schubert based on poems by Wilhelm Müller. At the same time, however, contemporary composers do not often use folklore and the Kashubian language in their works, so it will be an opportunity to see that a harmonious combination of these two elements is possible as much as possible.
