Competition performance of the XVII International Gombrowicz Festival. Harakiri Theater, Buenos Aires, Argentina
Entangled between the Second World War, the Polish emigrant community and the ghosts of his own biography, Witold Gombrowicz finds himself in a mad circus in which the notions of nation, masculinity, sexuality and heroism are pushed to the limits of the absurd.
Combining scenes from “Trans-Atlantic”, fragments of the writer's life and an imaginary relationship with Rita Gombrowicz, the show transforms the novel into a rebellion in which politics, ideals and obedience assume the same makeup. Ambassadors, military, artists, critics, patriots and traitors compete to impose a single way of being. “The Trans-Atlantic Circus” is more than a grotesque tale of nationalism — it is a theatrical war machine against any identity that tries to become the prevailing norm.
