About the event

The Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw invites you to creative family workshops, which we have prepared around the exhibition “You are at the heart of change. Surrealism and Anti-Fascism.”

During the meeting, we will examine how we can boldly change reality with the help of imagination. Surrealists believed that the world around us was not enough, and art was a wonderful tool for the struggle for freedom and a new vision of life. We will test this freedom in practice! Together we will consider how to look at objects and shapes, in order to perceive in them something completely different from what adult reason tells us. We will seek answers to these questions through experiments with form, movement and our own unfettered imagination.

What are we gonna do?

In the creative part, we will move to the educational room and completely change the way we perceive objects from our environment. Instead of sticking to rigid rules, we will bet on chance, rebellion, improvisation and the free combination of the most diverse ideas!

Cheating gravity: We will be inspired by Katarzyna Kobro's “Spatial Composition No. 9" for the work. It is a sheet metal sculpture, which in shape resembles a leaf in the wind or rough sea waves. Like the artist, we will open up to space. We will see how to create from a piece of ordinary material something that will deceive gravity, rise into the air and acquire unusual dynamics.

Looking your way: We will also benefit from the visionary ideas of Władysław Strzeminski. This artist believed that each of us has every right to look at the world completely in his own way and does not have to listen to others. We will build spatial forms in which we, from beginning to end, determine all the rules of the visual game.
