Legendary text. A stage adaptation by two-time Oscar winner Christopher Hampton of the great novel by the outstanding Hungarian writer Sándor Márai. A drama of passions whose heat does not go out despite the passage of more than 40 years. A masterful cast. A theatrical feast of the highest rehearsal.
The play was commissioned by Eric Abraham in collaboration with Robert Haggiag and was first staged on February 15, 2006 at the Duke of York's Theatre. Producers of the world premiere in London: Eric Abraham and Robert Haggiag.
Jan Englert and Daniel Olbrychski on one scene, in the scenography of an abandoned castle in the 1940s, during the Second World War in a rising longing for love, both male-female and male, which, however, has nothing to do with eroticism, as Henrik points out at the beginning. It is the love of two friends who prefer to be unhappy and lonely all their lives than to hurt each other.
This is a real stage heat of the two actors, the atmosphere is indescribable, this heat must be felt on your own. Appearing in just two scenes, Henrik's elderly nanny brings a poignant nostalgia to the play, making a huge impression on the audience. This role is played alternately by Maja Komorowska and Anna Seniuk. Katarzyna Jakubiak, Dziennik Teatralny
It is a theater of word, gesture and emotional tension hidden in a seemingly static conversation. Jan Englert, the director of the play and the performer of one of the main roles, makes a conscious decision to limit the means of staging as much as possible — the focus is on the actor, his voice, posture, breath and pause.
