The famous Chinese masterpiece and one of the most beautiful films of the 90s will be in Polish cinemas on May 22, in a new version.
“Hang the Red Lanterns” is an absolute gem in Zhang Yimou's rich and eclectic oeuvre (“House of Flying Daggers”, “Live”, “Hero”). The adaptation of Su Tong's short story “Wives and Concubines” brought him international recognition and the status of the new champion of world cinema. The Silver Lion in Venice, the BAFTA Award for Best Foreign Language Film and an Oscar nomination only complemented the director's success. In the lead role, Gong Li (“Red Sorghum”, “Confessions of a Geisha”) shines, who collaborated with Zhang nine times and quickly became an icon of modern cinema.
The film impresses with its innovative use of color, the masterful arrangement of historic 18th century spaces, dramatic precision and deeply feminist reflection. Although Chinese censorship saw in him a metaphor of an authoritarian system and delayed domestic distribution, nothing could harm his fame. Over time, the sophisticated costumed tale has landed on many lists with the best titles in the history of cinema.
The action takes place in China in the 1920s. 19-year-old Songlian becomes the fourth concubine of wealthy Mr. Chen. He goes to his impressive estate, where specific rules apply, and every aspect of everyday life is shaped by centuries-old traditions. The main character slowly discovers that in the female circle she has joined, there is a competition for the favor of the master of the house. But what can constant eruptions of jealousy, an atmosphere of mutual accusations and uncertainty about one's own position lead to? Will the inexperienced Songlian find herself in an intricate maze of courtyards and corridors?
The reconstruction of the film in 4K quality allows you to appreciate its visual beauty even more. Symmetrical painting frames, the play of red lights and phenomenal costumes and scenographies create an unforgettable aesthetic spectacle.
