About the event

Golden Mask for Mai Kleczewska for directing the play!

“The Promised Land” is a realistic portrait of the world on the brink of revolution. The economic revolution, the industrial revolution, but also the revolution of the models of human relations. Such was Reymont's “Promised Land”, such was Wajda — and so is Maya Kleczewska.

One of the most important contemporary theatre directors together with the well-known Zagłębiów audience playwright Tomasz Śpiewak (including the famous “Korzeniec” or “Horse, Woman and Canary”) discover the promised land in Sosnowiec, a city with a history surprisingly similar to that of Łódź. However, their “Promised Land” is not a tale of the past. This, again, is a realistic portrait of the world on the verge of revolution — but of a revolution as contemporary as possible, the medium of which is no longer factories but modern technologies and artificial intelligence. The show raises questions about the future of work, about the ever-living tensions of capitalism, the brutality of its rules and inequalities, but also about the still current mechanisms of striving for success. The heroes of this “Promised Land” are not fundamentally different from those of Reymont and Wajda: they continue to calculate, love, betray, risk everything — only in a different costume of the era.

In the “Promised Land” in Sosnowiec, Kleczewska renounces the traditional theatrical framework. The premiere of the play will take place not in the theater building, but in the historic bank — a place that once served to raise capital, and today it is to become a modern center combining business and culture. It's not just a set design — it's a symbol.

For the show The Promised Land there is a discount ticket for seniors and young teachers, students. Other discounts for this show do not apply.
