Ziggy Dust

On 18 October 2026 at 17:00 we invite you to the Student Cinema Niebieski Kocyk for an evening of two Ryszard Kruk documentaries: “Ziggy Dust” and “Republic. The Birth of a Legend”. One ticket includes both films and a meeting with Ryszard Kruk and Grzegorz Kopcewicz after the screenings.

Watchmaker, punk rock leader Bikini, DJ, Italian circus worker and dancing street cleaner in England. Zbigniew Colbecki, known as Ziggy Dust, defies simple definitions. Ryszard Kruk looks at his extraordinary journey, creating a story about freedom, the need to rebel and the courage to follow his own dreams.

The story begins in the late 1970s, in the environment of the Toruń music scene, whose important place was Od Nowa. It was here that the paths of people creating punk rock and a new wave intersected, and music became a way of expressing opposition to the surrounding reality. Zbigniew Cołbecki and his Bikini also grew out of this world.

The film takes us through the next chapters of the protagonist's life: musical search, emigration, work in an Italian circus and the recognition he gained in England, turning street cleaning into an energetic dance performance. His recordings attracted hundreds of thousands of viewers, and the BBC and CNN became interested in the story. We also get to know his life after returning to Poland, his family, his passion for running marathons and his plans for the future.

An important part of the documentary are music and memories of people who knew Zbigniew at different stages of his life, among them Robert Brylewski and Kazik Staszewski. The personal perspective of the director, who has known the hero since the 1980s, allows us to combine the portrait of a man with the history of social and cultural changes in Poland.

“Ziggy Dust” is a story about choosing between stability and adventure and the need to keep your own voice. The show in Od Nowie evokes the environment from which this story grew and the people for whom music was an experience of freedom.

We will start the evening at 17:00 with the film “Ziggy Dust” (45 minutes), and then we will present “The Republic. The Birth of a Legend” (55 minutes). The second documentary presents the beginnings of the band, which was born in Od Nowa, and its journey from musical exploration to national success.

After both films, there will be a meeting with Ryszard Kruk, documentary director, and Grzegorz Kopcewicz, who appears in “Republic. The Birth of a Legend.” It will be an opportunity to talk about movies, Toruń's music scene and the history of the place that combines both stories.

One ticket entitles you to participate in the whole evening: both screenings and a meeting with guests.
