The Berlinische Galerie is launching a new round of the popular “Circle Training:Art” format. This time, the sports-discursive course combines works from the permanent exhibition with works from the current special exhibition “Lovis Corinth. Then came Berlin!” (9.10.26—25.1.27).
Born in Tapiau in East Prussia, Lovis Corinth (1858—1925) was already one of the most famous and influential figures in the art metropolis of Berlin. In 1900, he moved from Munich to Berlin. At this point, the imperial capital was already much more progressive and vibrant than the Bavarian residential city. “It only started in Berlin,” Corinth is said to have commented on his steep artistic rise on the Spree.
The “Circle Training: Art” invites visitors to a lively dialogue about works of art, which are illuminated station by station. This time, the focus is on the genres of painting in the first quarter of the 20th century and will be discussed with expert art-historical accompaniment. Corinth's broad artistic oeuvre is used to explore the multi-faceted stylistic paths in dialogue with works by artists from his creative period. Corinth mastered the genres of portrait, history, genre, landscape and still life all with virtuosity. His compositions will be examined in detail in comparison with works by Jeanne Mammen, Lotte Laserstein, Max Beckmann, Edvard Munch, Lesser Ury and Max Liebermann.
