During the October meeting of the Golden Years — time for art! we will look at the history of porcelain and its remarkable European career.
Hard porcelain has been made in China since the 9th century, and the secret of its recipe has been closely guarded. In Europe, the first attempts to manufacture it were made since the 15th century. The breakthrough came at the beginning of the 18th century in Dresden, where thanks to the efforts of Frederick August I and the work of Ehrenfried Walter von Tschirnhaus and Johann Friedrich Böttger, it was possible to create hard porcelain on the Chinese model.
We invite you on Friday, October 23, to the Former Palace of the Bishops of Krakow, where Dr. Magdalena Śniegulska-Gomuła will talk about the beginnings of European attempts to make porcelain, the next stages of the search for its recipe and about the manufactories that have become part of the history of its production. Porcelain products are not only beautiful objects. The meeting will also be an opportunity to look at “white gold” as a testimony to history, changes in customs and European ambitions.
