What can a flag be if it is not a symbol of a state, an organization or an existing community?
During the “Sign of Presence” workshop we will create our own flags and banners from available materials.
The workshop accompanies the exhibition “Points of Focus” by Antonina Lorek. The direct inspiration is the work “Misfortune” — a carpet shown at the exhibition, which was created on the basis of a letter from Stanisława Przybyszewska.
During the meeting we will look at the different meanings of the fabric: from abacans, tatreez embroidery, Krakow corset and fishing nets, through the LGBT+ flag, the flag of Palestine, tricolore and “Solidarity”, to the wedding veil, prison uniform, dressing gauze or shroud.
It is not a simple list of symbols, but a test of how the material can store history, emotions, belonging, resistance or memory. We will work with fabric, but also with paper, so it is not necessary to have experience in sewing or working with the material. More important will be the idea, attentiveness and willingness to talk about what can become our sign of presence.
The workshop will be led by Antonina Lorek, author of the works presented at the exhibition.
Orunia station is architecturally accessible. There are no solutions for people with sensory disabilities.
