Do you want to know the truth at all costs?
A cult thriller for the first time in Polish cinemas! Stanley Kubrick called Disappearance (Spoorloos) “the scariest movie I've ever seen.” George Sluizer's sinister puzzle is a dark journey to the other side of morality and an intense portrait of an unscrupulous psychopath. Exciting horror and anxiety, Disappearance is a great Dutch classic that resembles a cross between Silence of the Sheep and Funny Games. From the moment of release, the film sneakily creeps into the consciousness of viewers, who have to answer the question themselves: “Do you want to know the truth at all costs”?
It starts innocently — with a holiday trip. The Dutch couple Saskia (Johanna ter Steege) and Rex (Gene Bervoets) go to France by car. Along the way, they argue and tease, learn French words. At some point, they stop at the gas station. Saskia goes to the toilet - then disappears. Her disappearance will haunt Rex for the rest of his life. We also quickly meet the kidnapper — he is Raymond (the shocking role of Bernard-Pierre Donnadieu), an inconspicuous chemistry teacher. Will Rex ever meet the abuser he gradually becomes obsessed with?
The perfect adaptation of Tim Krabbé's Golden Egg is a legendary film that at first struggled to find a distributor — and eventually got an American remake, also directed by Sluizer. Disappearance is a waking nightmare, a narrative puzzle from which there is no safe way out, and a philosophical horror played out mostly in sunny outdoors and bourgeois interiors. Rex and I follow the unknown, track down clues and look for a solution to the riddle.
The independent, low-budget hit of European cinema has a huge following around the world. Past Perfect will be pleased to present Sluizer's film in Polish cinemas — that is, where his ghostly magic works by far the strongest.
